Advanced BiomEdical OPTICAL Imaging and Data Analysis (BE-OPTICAL)

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015

Biomedical imaging is a research field that is producing ground breaking scientific discoveries that enhance the health and life quality of European citizens and have a huge economic impact. In order to maintain Europe’s leading position in the field, it is crucial to invest in the people who will lead R&D, and to promote the academic-private sector partnerships that will transfer the novel technologies to the market. In order to meet these needs, BE-OPTICAL will provide a unique and structured training programme to 14 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in a wide range of optical imaging technologies and signal processing tools, including fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy, optical coherence tomography, optogenetics, engineered nanomaterials and new techniques for the analysis of biomedical signals. The research is structures in four main areas: (1) Super-resolution optical imaging for the analysis of cellular processes; (2) High-resolution optical imaging of cardiac tissue; (3) Advanced instrumentation for ophthalmic imaging; (4) Innovative optical components, methods and software for image analysis. ESR10 hosted by BOEL develops novel ophthalmic instruments by combing multimodal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and optical coherence tomography. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme for research, technological development and demonstration.
